MISSION OBJECTIVE:
The Associate Director, Budgeting and Reporting is responsible for leading the design, implementation, and oversight of Equality Now’s global budgeting systems and reporting processes. This role ensures that budgets are aligned with organizational priorities, compliant with donor and regulatory requirements, and effectively monitored across regions. The Associate Director provides strategic guidance to leadership, supervises global budgeting and reporting staff, and builds organizational capacity to forecast, analyze, and communicate financial performance. By ensuring clarity, accountability, and adaptability in budgeting and reporting, this role strengthens data driven financial management, stewardship and contributes directly to Equality Now’s mission impact.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The following is a general outline of duties and responsibilities for this role. It is not an exhaustive list, and additional duties may be assigned or removed at the discretion of the Chief Financial and Administration Officer to meet organizational needs and priorities.

Purpose: Adapt

  • Lead the design and customization of organizational budgeting frameworks to ensure alignment with evolving strategic priorities, programmatic growth, and external funding conditions.
  • Develop and refine budget models and forecasting tools that adapt to operational shifts, donor requirements, and organizational needs.
  • Ensure annual and multi-year budgets are comprehensive, responsive, and sustainable, integrating insights from both finance and programmatic teams.
  • Analyze financial information, variances, and risks to provide adaptive recommendations that enhance fiscal decision-making and resource allocation.

Engagement: Persuade & Influence

  • Partner with senior leadership to guide budgeting and reporting strategies that align with long-term organizational objectives.
  • Collaborate with Finance, Programmes, and Development teams to strengthen integration of restricted grant reporting into organizational budgets.
  • Provide mentorship and capacity building to managers and staff, enhancing financial literacy and accountability across departments.
  • Influence internal practices by demonstrating the value of adaptive budgeting and transparent reporting.
  • Cultivate trusted relationships with institutional donors, ensuring transparency and compliance in grant budget preparation and reporting.
  • Serve as a key liaison with auditors, funders, and external partners, demonstrating Equality Now’s strong fiscal management and accountability.
  • Represent Equality Now in donor discussions related to budgeting and reporting, advocating for approaches that balance compliance with programmatic realities.

Delivery: Manage the Project Cycle

  • Collaborate with Finance, Program, and Development teams to plan, scope, and develop accurate, effective and well-costed budgets for capture and proposal efforts.
  • Drive the annual budgeting process, ensuring timely completion of organizational, departmental, and grant budgets, as well as periodic re-forecasts.
  • Oversee the consolidation of budgets in Sage Intacct Planning and ensure consistent updates and reporting cycles across regions.
  • Supervise preparation of donor budget reports and variance analyses, ensuring deadlines are met without compromising accuracy.
  • Monitor implementation of budgets across regions, flagging variances and collaborating with budget holders to adjust forecasts and spending.
  • Ensure budget reports are accurate, accessible, and strategically presented to support decision-making at all levels of the organization.
  • Lead the continuous improvement of financial policies and procedures, integrating lessons learned to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Supervise and mentor staff to further develop budget assumptions that are consistent with donor requirements and in  alignment with institutional goals.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS & TARGET SKILLS PROFILE:

 Substantive Knowledge

  • Deep knowledge of nonprofit finance and accounting principles, including budgeting, restricted/unrestricted fund management, and variance analysis.
  • Strong expertise in organizational-wide budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting for global, multi-office NGOs.
  • Familiarity with donor compliance frameworks, restricted grants, and international funding mechanisms.
  • Understanding of project management principles and how financial systems support program delivery.

Communication Skills

  • Fluent in English; proficiency in Spanish, French, or Arabic is highly desirable for global reach.
  • Ability to present complex financial data clearly to both financial and non-financial stakeholders, including leadership, staff, and donors.
  • Strong written skills to produce accurate, accessible financial reports, narratives, and donor compliance documents.
  • Skilled at facilitating cross-cultural conversations about financial performance and organizational priorities.
  • Strong influencing and listening skills to align diverse stakeholders around budgeting and reporting processes.
  • Adept at fostering cross-cultural collaboration and cultivating trust-based relationships consistent with the mission and values of Equality Now.

Execution Skills

  • Proven ability to oversee and manage multiple budgeting and reporting cycles simultaneously, ensuring deadlines and compliance are consistently met.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement in financial management.
  • Demonstrated capacity to lead teams, manage performance, and ensure professional development of direct reports.
  • Ability to balance strategic oversight with attention to operational detail in global financial systems.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally and domestically, sometimes on short notice, to support regional teams, engage with partners, and represent Equality Now.

Targeted Specialized Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s degree or equivalent certification preferred).
  • 8+  years of progressively responsible experience in financial management, budgeting, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated expertise in donor-funded budgeting and reporting for international NGOs, particularly in governance, gender justice, or human rights sectors.
  • Hands-on experience with Sage Intacct (financial accounting and planning modules) and advanced Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, charts, formulas).
  • Familiarity with forecasting methods, data analysis, and financial modeling techniques.
  • Experience supervising multi-regional staff and managing cross-departmental collaboration on budgeting and reporting functions.
